Pistol Permitting Process
- Complete my basic pistol course.
- Present the course certificate to the troopers barracks, police department, or town hall (depending on where you live) and request a pistol permit application.
- Fulfill the municipality’s requirements and submit the application packet. Requirements include:
- Must be 21 or older
- Present the Z Pistol Basics certificate showing you have completed my course
- Present proof of citizenship, such as birth certificate, naturalization papers, or passport
- Getting fingerprinted
- Present three letters of character reference (cannot be from family)
- Provide passport photos
- Provide three certified bank checks to your town/city and the state
- Applications may need to be notarized
- Upon completion of the requirements and submission of paperwork, your information will go to local, state, and federal agencies for background checks. It should take between 8 and 14 weeks for the local authority that initially received your application to get the necessary paperwork back from the various agencies. Be patient; don’t get aggravated. Do not call everyday asking if your paperwork has come in. That tends to make things take longer!
- After the temporary state permit has come in through your local authority, take it to the Department of Public Safety.
- Things that you have to bring to DPS:
- Valid 60 day temporary permit
- Personal check or money order payable to DPS (Cash will not be accepted).
- Drivers license or Connecticut ID card
- Proof of Citizenship
